Fascinating Facts About Newborns: What Every Parent Should Know
2 min read
Bringing home a newborn is both exciting and overwhelming, especially as you discover just how amazing these tiny humans are. From their unique senses to unexpected changes, here are some fascinating facts about newborns that will help you understand and connect with your little one during those precious early weeks.
1. Newborns See in Black and White
When your baby first arrives, their world is a little less colourful than ours. Newborns can only see in black and white for the first few weeks of life. This is because the nerve cells in their eyes and brain that control vision aren’t fully developed at birth. As their eyesight matures, you’ll start to notice them reacting to different colours.
2. Newborns Don't Cry Tears at First
Though it’s common to hear newborns cry shortly after birth, these early cries are more like whimpers than tearful sobs. Their tear glands are still developing and typically don’t start producing tears until they’re around three weeks old. So, while those cries may still tug at your heartstrings, the real tearful moments will come a little later.
3. Birthmarks Are Completely Normal
If your baby is born with a birthmark or a unique skin feature, there’s no need to worry. In fact, around 80% of babies are born with birthmarks, and they’re usually harmless. These marks can range in size and colour, but most will fade or change as your baby grows.
4. Hair Loss Is Common in Newborns
Don’t be surprised if your baby’s hair starts to fall out in the first few months. It’s quite normal for newborns to lose some or even all of their hair between 3 to 6 months old. Interestingly, the hair that grows back may be a completely different colour from their first!
5. Babies Sleep Better with Soothing Sounds
You might think babies need quiet to sleep, but many newborns actually find comfort in gentle noise. Sounds like a heartbeat, flowing water, or even the soothing rhythm of ocean waves can help them relax and settle into sleep more easily. Consider white noise machines or soft music to help create a calming environment.
6. Mum is Number One
Newborns may not see clearly right away, but they can distinguish their mother from others within just a few weeks. While other sights and sounds might quickly fade from their memory, a mother’s scent and voice are instantly recognisable and comforting to them.
In these early weeks, newborns are constantly adapting to the world around them. With time, they’ll start to show more of their personality, and you’ll witness the incredible growth and changes that make these moments so magical.
