Your pregnancy at 16 weeks
You should be seeing your midwife again this week, and if you’re lucky, you will get to hear your baby’s heartbeat, which is usually between 120–160 bpm. Some people say if your baby’s heartbeat is over 140 bpm then it’s a girl, but unfortunately, this is just a myth.
Your baby is getting ready for another big growth spurt and can now smile and frown. Although at the moment, these movements are completely random as they have no control over their muscles yet. They can also move their hands, and if you could see inside your bump, you might see their hands forming fists and even linking hands. Can you believe you will be holding those little hands in a few months' time?
- Facial Expressions: Random smiles and frowns are developing as their facial muscles grow.
- Hand Movements: Your baby can move their hands and may form fists or link their hands together.
Changes in Mum
Your 16-week midwife appointment should happen this week, and you should receive the results from all those blood tests taken at your booking appointment. You will probably also have to do another urine test. Get used to these as you will be asked to urinate in a pot regularly from now on. Antenatal Classes
Have you thought about antenatal classes yet? Now might be a good time to book yourself and your partner onto some local or online classes. They are a great opportunity to meet other parents-to-be and also learn what to expect both during the birth and after your baby arrives.
- Benefits of Classes: Antenatal classes provide valuable information about childbirth, baby care, and help you build a support network with other expecting parents.
Tips for This Week
- Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink plenty of water, especially as your blood volume increases.
- Healthy Diet: Maintain a balanced diet to support your baby’s growth and your own well-being.
- Exercise: Light exercise, such as walking or prenatal yoga, can help you stay fit and prepare for childbirth.
