From 18-20 weeks, you will be offered your anomaly scan where the sonographer will check your baby in detail to ensure they are growing as they should. This is likely to be the last time you see your baby until you hold them in your arms!
Baby's Development
Your baby has grown more than 2 cm within the last week and is now the size of a sweet potato, approximately 14.2 cm from head to bottom.
- Facial Features: Amazingly, you can now visibly see eyelashes and eyebrows on your baby’s little face, and their eyes can move behind their closed eyelids.
- Gender Reveal: If you do have your scan this week, you may be asked if you want to know your baby’s gender, which is exciting for some couples while others prefer a surprise. However, note that some hospitals may not give you this option.
Changes in Mum
Your bump continues to grow, and you may start noticing a dark line running down your stomach called the linea nigra. This is completely normal and caused by skin pigmentation, and will most likely vanish a few weeks or months after baby is born.
- Dental Health: When was the last time you had a dental check-up? During pregnancy and for a year after baby is born, mums can have free dental checks, so it is worth booking one in. Why, you may ask? During pregnancy, you are more likely to suffer from gum disease due to hormonal changes and plaque build-up. Take advantage of the free care while you can.
Tips for This Week
- Anomaly Scan: Prepare for your anomaly scan by jotting down any questions you might have for your sonographer.
- Dental Care: Book a dental check-up to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy during your pregnancy.
- Skin Care: Don’t worry about the linea nigra; it’s a natural part of pregnancy and will fade after birth.
Looking Ahead
As you approach the midpoint of your pregnancy, there are many exciting milestones ahead. The anomaly scan is a significant check-up, and feeling your baby’s movements becoming stronger is a joyful reminder of the life growing inside you.
We’re here to support you every step of the way. Enjoy this special time, and soon you’ll be seeing even more incredible progress as your pregnancy continues.
