Your pregnancy at 28 weeks
Welcome to your third trimester! At 28 weeks, your baby is about 37.6 cm long and weighs around 1kg. Learn about your baby’s development, tips for managing reduced energy levels, and the importance of regular check-ups as you prepare for the final stretch of your pregnancy.
You’ve made it… welcome to your third trimester! At the end of this journey, you will finally get to meet your baby. You’ve got this, Mum, not long to go now!
Baby's Development
Your baby is about 37.6 cm long, similar to a 100-pack of newborn nappies (something you will need to stock up on soon), and weighs about 1kg, the same as a bag of sugar.
- Heart Rate: The baby’s heart rate is slowing a little now compared to its peak of 170 bpm during the first trimester. It is now about 140 bpm, which is still faster than yours at approximately 80-85 bpm. The reason baby’s heart beats so fast is that their heart is still small, and the only way to pump blood around is by going at a faster pace.
- Listening to the Heartbeat: If your partner is lucky, they may be able to hear baby’s heartbeat if they position their ear in just the right place on your bump, but it can be quite tricky to find.
Changes in Mum
You should have another appointment with your midwife this week to check your blood pressure and test your urine for proteins. If you had any screening tests at your last appointment, you will discuss the results.
- Energy Levels: You may find your energy starts to reduce again as baby grows over the next few weeks. It's important to balance rest and exercise.
- Back Pain: You may suffer a little from back pain as the extra weight puts pressure on your lower back. Exercise is still important at this stage to keep your muscles strong, but also remember to put your feet up occasionally.
Tips for This Week
- Regular Check-ups: Attend your scheduled midwife appointments to monitor your health and your baby’s development.
- Manage Energy: Balance exercise and rest to manage your energy levels. Light exercise like walking or prenatal yoga can help keep your muscles strong.
- Back Care: Be mindful of your posture and try exercises that support your back. Rest when needed to alleviate any back pain.
