Your pregnancy at 21 weeks
At 21 weeks, your baby now weighs more than your placenta and is moving around regularly. Learn about your baby’s development, how to manage increased clumsiness, and the importance of healthy snacks and pelvic floor exercises.
This week, your baby will weigh more than your placenta for the first time and will remain that way until you give birth in less than 4 months' time!
Baby's Development
Your baby is really moving around inside your womb now, and you will probably be feeling these movements regularly. They will also start to establish waking and sleeping patterns, which unfortunately don’t always match your own. You may find your baby becomes more active as you go to sleep.
- Size: Your baby is now around 26.7 cm from head to heel, roughly the size of a litre bottle of Milton, something you may start using quite a bit in a few months' time!
Changes in Mum
Do you find yourself falling over a bit more than normal, Mum? As your bump expands, your centre of gravity changes, and you may find yourself a little clumsier than usual.
- Clumsiness: Try not to worry if you do take a tumble, as your baby is well protected inside. However, it may be worth mentioning to your midwife if you fall directly on your bump.
- Increased Hunger: You may also be feeling a little hungrier than usual. Try choosing healthy snack options that will not only give you energy but also top up your body’s nutrients.
- Pelvic Floor Exercises: Don’t forget to keep up with your pelvic floor exercises. These are essential for maintaining pelvic strength and supporting your growing baby.
Tips for This Week
- Healthy Snacks: Keep healthy snacks handy to manage increased hunger and maintain energy levels. Think fruits, nuts, yogurt, and whole grains.
- Stay Balanced: Be mindful of your changing centre of gravity. Move slowly and deliberately to avoid falls.
- Pelvic Floor Exercises: Continue your pelvic floor exercises regularly to strengthen your pelvic muscles.
