Your pregnancy at 5 weeks
Congratulations, Mum-to-be! At 5 weeks, your baby is now an embryo and busy developing the foundations for major organs. Learn about the amazing changes happening and what early pregnancy symptoms you might experience this week.
This is an exciting week for your baby, which has now become an embryo. You may have only just found out you are pregnant—huge congratulations from us! Your baby, though tiny, is already going through some amazing changes.
Baby's Development
At this stage, your baby may only be the size of an apple pip, a teeny tiny 2mm, but it is already developing the foundations for its major organs. Amazingly, the heart is forming, and it already has some of its own blood vessels. Blood is starting to circulate, which is an incredible milestone.
The umbilical cord is also starting to form, which will be vital in supplying your baby with nutrients and oxygen throughout the pregnancy. Additionally, your embryo’s outer layer of cells will begin to form the neural tube, which will develop into your baby’s brain and spinal cord.
In terms of looks, you won’t be able to see any family resemblance yet. At this stage, your baby still resembles a cluster of cells, looking more like a tiny dinosaur than a human.
Changes in Mum
You may have missed your period and be considering taking a test, or you might have been taking daily tests for the last week or so. Either way, you should hopefully be seeing a positive test this week as your body responds to your new wombmate.
You may also be experiencing some early pregnancy symptoms. These can include:
- PMT Symptoms: Similar to premenstrual tension, you might notice mood swings or mild cramping.
- Breast Changes: Your boobs may be getting bigger and more tender.
- Fatigue: Feeling more tired than usual is a common early sign of pregnancy.
- Food Cravings or Aversions: You may notice some unusual food cravings or go off your favourite food altogether—hormones are to blame for this.
Food and Nutrition
Speaking of food, have you checked which foods you need to avoid yet? It’s important to ensure you’re eating safely for both you and your developing baby. Certain foods can pose risks during pregnancy, so it’s best to stay informed.
Here are some key foods to avoid:
- Unpasteurised Dairy Products: These can contain harmful bacteria.
- Raw or Undercooked Meat and Eggs: To reduce the risk of infections such as toxoplasmosis and salmonella.
- Certain Fish: Avoid high-mercury fish like shark, swordfish, and king mackerel.
